Base Colours

Understanding Base Colours

Every hair colour starts with a base — the level that shows how light or dark your hair is. This forms the foundation for every shade, from cool blondes to rich brunettes.

What Is a Base Colour?

The base is simply a number between 1 and 12:
  • 1 = Black
  • 12 = Extra light blonde
Everything else sits in between. This number helps decide how bright, deep, or soft your final colour will look.

Why the Base Colour Matters

When I colour your hair, I’m not just choosing a pretty shade — I’m balancing your natural pigment, your target colour, and any underlying warmth in the hair.

This is how you get:
  • Cool blondes without brassiness
  • Chocolate browns that stay glossy
  • Natural-looking balayage that grows out softly
  • Colours that last longer and fade beautifully

Tones & Undertones

Once your base level is set, I add the tone — for example:
  • Cool/ashy for a beige or icy finish
  • Warm for golden, honey, or caramel
  • Neutral for soft, natural-looking results
The tone sits on top of your base, giving the final colour its personality.

How I Use This in the Salon

During your consultation, I assess:
  • Your natural base level
  • How light or dark you want to go
  • Whether we need to lift, darken, or balance warmth
  • The tone that will best suit your skin tone and style

This is how we customise every result so it looks right for you — not just like a picture on Pinterest.

Book a colour appointment or consultation and we’ll plan your perfect shade, from the base up.
