HOW HARD WATER AFFECTS HAIR :
Today I am going to talk about hard water and its effects of your hair, its a long one so I may need to spill out in to the comments...
40%-50% of the UK has hard water which effects all of us in the south east, while it is fine for drinking its really harsh on your hair and skin
Problems include:
Hair and skin feels dry/flaky/damadged/rough
Hair is harder to colour
Dandruff or eczema on the scalp and skin
Colours fade quickly
Thinning hair
Perms appear to fall out quickly
Discolouration and darkening off hair
Hair lacks body and shine
WHERE IT COMES FROM:
Ground-if water comes from underground it filters though layers of minerals (aquifers) the PH (7) increases the dissolving affect of the mineral. These dissolved deposits of minerals are found in the water when pumped above ground and used to bath
Reservoir contains less minerals to start with as it hasn't filtered though the mineral layers, however increasing population are polluting the water causing additional bacteria growth as a result treatment plants must add more chlorine to kill bacteria and add lime a calcium product to help control the chlorine levels.
Water hardness is determined by the level of calcium found in the water from naturally filtering or adding from treatment plants.
While calcium is the element that determines water hardness there are many other elements that effect the texture and condition of the hair
Minerals that affect the hair:
- calcium
- iron
- copper
- magnesium
- silica
- lead
Chlorine another element that is added to kill bacteria also adversely affect the hair.
How to minerals attach to the hair:
Our hair scalp and skin have an electrical charge that is naturally negative,
Minerals and oxidises are charged positive, when a positive charge mineral comes into contact with our negative charge hair scalp or skin it attaches like a magnet
Please look in comments for how the minerals individually affect hair
And after buy a water filter shower head from somewhere that will help clear up your hair and skin
CHLORINE:
it is not a mineral but an oxidiser. Put into drinking and pool water to kill bacteria
Chlorine also oxidises minerals into the hair causing worst effects on the hair.
Active chlorine causes hair to feel gummy when wet and straw-like when dry
As an oxidiser chlorine can cause sun and air to oxidise and worsen the conditions
Can cause the hair to feel dry
Can cause the hair to feel brittle
Can cause the hair to lack shine
CALCIUM :
leaves the hair feeling dry and weighed down.
Can cause perms to look relaxed
Can build up on the scalp causing the appearance of dandruff
Can chock the hair at the mouth of the follicle causing the hair to break off and blocking any new growth
IRON:
Leaves hair feeling weighed down dry and brittle
Can cause blonde to go orangeand dark hair to go darker
Causes a barrier that blocks perms and colour processing properly
(this is why some peoples hair goes yellow/orange when bleaching as it has a barrier!)
COPPER:
can come from copper piping
Added to pools to control algea
Added to lakes for same reason
Cooper on the hair :
Discolours hair causing blonde hair to turn green and darkening dark hair
Weighed down and cause dryness
Causes a barrier that stops colour bleach and perms from entering the hair again causing the yellow orange blacking that you see
MAGNESIUM :
Found where ever calcium is, and. Is abundant in the ground filtering into water
Can cause lack of shine, weighed down, dry and again builds up causing a barrier for colour and bleach to work
SILICA :
Is a sand like substance that is bound to calcium and magnesium, and is insoluble deposits
SILICA is the main one that causes dandruff looking build up and has very similar affects to calcium dry flaky build up that stops hair growth by chocking the follicle
